Tired of being without a current contract, New York’s 7,500 day-care directors and teachers are demanding a seat at the bargaining table. As of this month, they have been working without a contract for three years (and without raises for four). A spokesperson for the Council of School Supervisors and Administrators (CSA) says the instability is pushing the city’s most qualified educators to abandon early childhood education and teach older kids. To force the mayor to sit down and negotiate, the CSA and its parent union, DC 1707, just launched a new public awareness campaign involving radio spots, newspaper editorials, letters and over 10,000 postcards to the mayor signed by parents of kids in daycare. An event will be held on the steps of City Hall on April 15 at 10 a.m.
