Why not post under your own name?

Great article Jarrett. I thought Mike Powell did a nice job but this surpasses that. Jeff

Changing demographics and the crack epidemic peaked in Dinkins term also contributing to the drop in crime stats which subsequent mayors capitalized on.

Sadly Dinkins was an establishment man, kicked up to City Clerk as is the usual award for not rocking the boat, indebted to the Democrat Machine; he played tennis rather than addressing government waste corruption at two scheduled press conferences. Well, nobody’s perfect and politics means compromise.

Great piece on David Dinkins. One reason that Dinkins lost to Giuliani was that there was a question on the ballot of whether Staten Island should secede from New York City. That measure brought out a larger than usual conservative group giving Giuliani the win by a narrow margin.

Thanks for pointing out that Dinkins not Giuliani was the architect of NYC revitalization. The Giuliani of those days was a younger version of the Giuliani of today. Except for a few days in the immediate aftermath of 911 Giuliani was a mean spirited person surrounding himself with political appointees. Under his leadership there was a decline in housing affordability and the beginning of the decline in the NYCHA, which prior to his administration was one of the nations best run housing authorities.

David Dinkins was a true mensch who
loved this city and it’s people- he was a true New Yorker in the best sense of that phrase.

I do not think the obituaries in the major dailies really did him justice. This comes much closer, thank you, but I would have liked to have see more about his commitment to youth development, the Beacon Schools, the Youth Bureau under Richard Murphy. This certainly contributed to crime reduction and is an important part of his legacy.
