Pure leftists thuggery. The Community Boards aren’t perfect but it gives locals a say in issues affecting their communities. Community Board elections would cost a fortune, nothing wrong with the current appointment system.

Wait, “ghetto animal” wasn’t enough, now we’re “leftist thugs” too? As opposed to Community Board thugs? FOH with that nonsense! Community Board elections don’t have to “cost a fortune,” Why not create a system that is more “participatory” in the style of capital funding votes? Gosh, I’d prefer paper ballots over political appointments any day. The ongoing tale of our “two cities” is proof that there is in fact something seriously wrong with the current system. Community Boards members first and foremost serve the politicians who appoint them. The lack of transparency also shields them from disclosing their own political and financial interests and prevents the public from understanding the true factors that affect how critical, life-altering decisions are being made about the future of their neighborhoods. Democracy is hardly a “communist” concept. By contrast, boards members too often act like authoritarian “despots.” The current system only works for those who benefit.

I agree with Ms Ortiz’s proposals for reforming community boards and would add one more proposal – every community board/CB sub-committee meeting should be recorded on video and live streamed so that all members of the public can see and participate in the proceedings.

Those protesters have probably done nothing to improve their neighborhood. They should have been arrested and banned from future meetings. Having said that, some of the proposed community board reforms make sense.
