CityViews: Restricting For-Hire Vehicles Will Hurt New Yorkers When They Most Need Help

Many Outer Borough residents depend on Uber/Lyft for special trips to Manhattan for doctor and hospital visits, airport trips and long intra-borough trips. The yellow taxis are dying because they are usually filthy, many times un-airconditioned, usually with a surly driver. Uber/Lyft sends out a comfortable always air-conditioned sedan. Many of the local car services have improved their fleets to better compete with Uber/Lyft.

The number one reason I choose to use Via/Lyft over yellow cabs is because it is almost impossible to hold medalion cab drivers accountable. If you file a complaint against a medallion cab driver – and I’ve had many, many experiences where complaints were merited, for example cab drivers using abusive language, refusing to take me to a specific destination, smoking in the cab, broken seat belts – you are required to attend a hearing in person on whatever date eventually gets assigned. If I can’t or won’t take the time off of work to attend this hearing, the complaint is dismissed. If I have a complaint about a Lyft driver (which is rare, because the drivers know they’ll be accountable) I can give them a poor rating, send a message through the app, I’ll get an immediate response and an immediate refund if merited.
