The Turnout Crash is not De Blasio’s Fault. It’s Everybody’s Problem

Are the views of the people who didn’t vote different from those who did? Suppose the other 76% had voted, do you have a reason to think the outcome would be different?

Are non voters poorer? Richer? More leftwing?

Why — other than shame on us — are people not voting?

I’m mystified by the extremely low turnout. deBlasio is disliked in my home borough of Staten Island. Yet only 30% of registered voters turned out to vote, and that was the highest turnout for the 5 boroughs. deBlasio won with only 14.372% of the registered vote. A mandate in name only.

Just playing devil’s advocate here: Maybe he’s not disliked that much? It seems like with a favorite daughter running against him, if folks really hated the mayor, they’d have come out.

Close elections increase turnout. Racially polarized elections increase turnout. We haven’t haf many of them in NYC recently.
