Twenty-five members of Families United for Racial and Economic Justice (FUREE) rallied outside the Greenwood Welfare Center in Brooklyn October 6, calling for full access to education and job training. Local Law 23, which guarantees these opportunities, has been on the books for over a year, but FUREE contends that the city’s Human Resources Administration has yet to respond to it with any significant program changes. In a report they released in conjunction with the Urban Justice Center, FUREE found that although 88 percent of public assistance recipients were interested in attending an educational program within the last year, only 20 percent were actually attending school, and 78 percent of their respondents said they were not even aware that such programs existed.
