I taught inside adult women’s and men’s prisons for 18 years, where I wrote curriculum to fit the population’s needs. Most of my work centered on parenting, family relationships and social responsibility. I left the system as a correctional educator when budget cuts slashed funding for most post-high school education and many vocational training programs. I went on to volunteer inside a women’s reentry prison, facilitating a “Preparing for Release” program that included classes for women offenders and their family members together.
I remain an advocate for criminal justice reform, prison education programs and the rights of children of incarcerated parents. All need attention and support from the general population of each state and our country. My latest published book, TEACH INSIDE, is a series of activities for use in prison classrooms or for self-guided study inside prisons or jails.

I graduated in Attica from Canisius College in Buffalo NY in 1978, when we were able to get pell grants and tap grants in NY. When released I went to lawschool in MD, and graduate lawschool, getting both a JD and an LLM in Taxation, passed both the NY and MD bars, but was never admitted due to my armed robbery conviction. However, my education allowed me to become a successful real estate investor, and I had a number of serially successful businesses, retiring at 50. The education I finished while inside allowed me to cope and be happy and successful after release. Society is well served by allowing people with the skills necessary to attend college and get educated while in prison, since it will save it further problems post release.

Hello, thanks for the comment. I work with folks coming home pursuing professional careers. I’d be very interested to learn more about the limitations you ran into trying to get the law degree, or did you mean getting hired for jobs? Please connect with me if you are open to speaking about this. Thanks
