FYI: Twenty-five Councilmembers, led by the Working Families Party’s Hiram Monserrate, introduced a bill yesterday that would bar city officials from asking about or disclosing the immigration status of people seeking services. Advocates say many undocumented immigrants avoid police and other civil servants even when in need for fear of being scooped up in the immigration dragnet. The bill also guarantees the privacy of information about sexual orientation, disability and health status, limiting official inquiry to situations in which reasonable suspicion of criminal activity exists or data collection—such as disease surveillance—is required. Mayor Bloomberg’s position on the measure remains to be seen. [12/5/02]
