A further look into the rebirth of Parkchester should include the partnership of the management, the city and the state and a social service network for the establishment of the on-going Naturally Occurring Retirement Community, known as the Parkchester Enhancement Project NORC. Case Management and social services are provided to all residents of Parkchester over the age of 60. These services enhance the quality of life for these residents and enables them to remain safe and independent within their community.

This piece overlooks the vast loss of wealth destroyed by the crash of prices in the complex due to poor management prior to 1998. My Aunt, an immigrant from the Caribbean was financially decimated by Parkchester. She bought a 2-bedroom apartment in late 1988 tor $83,000. Citibank refused to let her refinance despite never paying a mortgage payment late. The rising maintenance costs let to the cost of the apartment being around $1,500/month in 1998,. when a two bedroom was renting for $800 to $850. The place couldn’t be sold, and it eventually went into foreclosure, where a Pakistani bought it for $28,000. Citibank sued and received a deficiency judgment for $73K. Citibank seized $5,000 from her bank account through chicanery (they didn’t show up at the first court hearing, and then subsequently sent all legal notices to the wrong address, enabling them to obtain a default judgment) before she was forced to declare bankruptcy.

It might have been good living in parkchester back then but not now, I live at 2130 e.tremont ave in parkchester and this building has been having problems with the intercom, the entrance door doesn’t work, the lights in front of the building and the elevator breaks down every other Friday. The projects are starting to look better.

The lesson to be learned is not to trust CPC or the Olshans. The sponsor refuses to allow owners to operate the board of managers. The sponsor awards itself a management contract without bidding. It established a phony public safety LLC to remove funds from the condominiums. CPC & Olshans have done nothing but put in a place to pilfer money from unit owners. The NYSAG should investigate.

Why can’t seniors that have been living in Parckchester for 50 yrs or more can’t get their kitchens updated.? It’s very difficult for us that are over 80 yrs old to use the small and low refrigerators without incurring such back pain also the cabinets are a problem as well as the old wooden counters. Don’t we deserve better accommodations in our old age? It isn’t like we will be dwelling in this place much longer. It’s bad enough trying to navigate the main floor stairs with our walkers and canes and sometimes cancelling doctors and rehab appointments because the elevator is out of service for up to three days at a time! We have been good tenants please treat us with respect and compassion.
