Mr. Lauster is very much on track. Governors Cuomo and Murphy and Mayor DiBlasio may be waiting to see the results of the 2020 elections. Instead, they should commit funds to restart the project now and be prepared to carry on without other financial support. The risks are too great wait.

Agreeing with you specifically about not waiting for the outcome of elections, I recall one of Moynihan’s accomplishments as senator was obtaining federal reimbursement for funds NY State had previously spent building the NY Thruway. We need to repair and expand rail service now. The good news is that unlike poorer regions, the money is available locally. Obtaining federal reimbursement later would be nice (and I think appropriate), but whether or not federal funds are forthcoming is irrelevant. The repairs and expansion are essential.

It is inconceivable that these major repairs are not addressed immediately. With or without federal assistance, the need to proceed now seems self-evident. That our transportation systems are being allowed to collapse is shocking.

A century ago, the Pennsylvania built the entire New York Penn couples, from New York Transfer to Sunnyside Yards, entirely out of its won resources.
