I moved to NYC in June 2016 and to Flatbush (PLG, whatever) this year. At first, I went to get my NY driver’s license at the DMV, I tried to register to vote- but at that point the system glitched on the…kiosk?, and I submitted the paper form instead. After the move to Flatbush, I updated my information on the DMV website- but even there the system for voter registration seemed to block my registration, but I thought it eventually went through. 2 weeks ago, I checked where my polling place to vote was, only to discover that I wasn’t registered to vote in NY. By that point it was too late to do so… I’m not giving up on successfully registering, but find the difficulty and technical issues to be fairly suspect… Who knows.

Interesting also in light of Sept primary – where Eugene only got 40 pct of vote and other candidates got 60 pct – how is it that Eugene could pick up so many more voters clearly disgruntled with him in the primary? His opponent and voters deserve an investigation

I totally agree! That’s a huge jump from 40% to 60%. He was at ps 249 twice. Walking around, shaking hands and taking pictures with workers as well as voters. Brian Cunningham was never there!! He ran a very clean and respectful campaign.

Mr. Cunningham ran a respectful, productive campaign but his complaints are noted but will it rise to the level of voiding the contest probably not. In this “progressive” voting overall is suppressed and we compare with some of the most oppressive southern states. His concession speech was right on. Working to improve the voting process overall in NYS is advisable and will keep him relevant going forward. Same day registration, DMV registration, electronic voting etc. I wonder how they voted on the Con Con? Would have been a great time to update the process.

The same thing happened in Council District 43, where candidate John Quaglione–accompanied by the current State Senator, Marty Golden, who Quaglione works for–was at various polling places not his own, giving out cookies to poll workers. According to Quaglione, gifts for poll workers are allowed, as long as they don’t exceed $20 in value.

However, this article makes it clear that being inside a polling place that is not your own–which Quaglione did both during the primary and the general election–is against the rules. He and his supporters maintain that he and Golden hanging around inside polling places is A-OK, even as people complained it made them uncomfortable, as was reported by Kings County Politics (https://www.kingscountypolitics.com/bay-ridge-polls-grow-contentious-hotly-contested-election/)

I have two questions for readers of this paper, as I honestly don’t know what to do about the good-old-boys’ gladhanding that goes on in this area, which will be even worse and more obvious next year as Golden runs for re-election: (1) Is it worth pursuing action against Mr. Quaglione for being in polling places other than his own (especially considering he lost the election)? and (2) How can we ensure that this doesn’t happen in future races?

Thanks for any advice anyone is willing to give.

I was told the same thing at my voting site to “vote down the line.” I wanted a new ballot b/c I wanted to vote for DeBlasio on WFP line and I saw it after I had filled in the Democratic bubble. So then she said, you need to vote down the line. Then I got mad and said, “NO, I can vote for whatever party I want as long as I don’t vote for more than one candidate.” To which she then realized she was explaining it wrong. I don’t know who are training these people but they are saying the wrong thing. They need to say ” you can vote for ONE candidate in each position” and then point to the party columns. It’s ridiculous and the ballot design is SO BAD and the apathy of the poll workers is so bad that they are influencing voters how to vote and actually giving BAD instructions.

During the primary elections I was handed a Mathieu Eugene flyer as I was in line at PS92 — definitely within 100 feet of the polling place, and right next to a sign that said “No Electioneering.”
