City Limits is used to making headlines wherever we go, so it wasn’t shocking to us when last week’s mayoral forum on policy for the aging—which I was very proud to moderate—made it into the news.
Of course, most of that news was about the fireworks that went off when former Councilman Sal Albanese said former Congressman Anthony Weiner was “lying” about a 1997 City Council vote just as he had initially “lied” about the 2011 sexting scandal, after which Weiner implied that Albanese was a “demagogue.”
Before and after the shouting, however, Albanese and Weiner were joined by Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, Comptroller John Liu and supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis in a 90-minute discussion of senior policy. As I mentioned to the crowd (just before flubbing the vowel sounds in Catsimatidis’s name), since everybody is going to get older and the vast majority of us are going to live to be senior citizens, aging is one of those rare issues that literally affects everybody.
