As people work from home and increasingly shop from home, and dedicate an ever increasing share of their income to rent, they need incentives to stay in New York City. A big one is the parks. If parks are neglected or disproportionately so favored that they become over-crowded, like Central Park on a nice spring weekend, people will say “why am I still struggling to live here?” They will move. The parks, like nature itself, must be maintained so people will want to live here. The parks are more than mere amenities, they are a major reason to live in New York City now. They repay the investment many times over and we neglect them at our peril.
