“Crudely speaking, that’s an 850 percent return on Mr. Aly’s investment 40 years ago.”

    850 TIMES return. 85000 percent.

“A Bloomberg-era rezoning has transformed Community District 7 from one of the quietest real-estate markets to one of the busiest. In the year 2000, not a single new unit received a certificate of occupancy in the district. Last year, there was paperwork for 749, according to the Furman Center.”

While I understand the need for housing, most of what’s been built here is shoddy and out of context. We’re also carrying an unfair burden of supportive housing with more units being developed for chronically homeless, mentally ill, and substance abusing residents. Norwood looks different on the periphery along Webster, but has retained much of its character.

Just to the south across Mosholu Pkwy, Bedford Park has not fared as well. Its once beautiful, historic homes have been leveled, one by one, at a unsettling pace, changing the character of entire blocks. Less than a decade ago, we were known for our clean, quiet streets and charm.

Today, the neighborhood looks like a haphazard, overcrowded urban area with garbage strewn all over. I wonder what plans, if any, the city has to accommodate new residents in terms of schools, transportation, sanitation, and sewers. I’ve seen the area turn from solidly working class to increasingly poor and unemployed. I’ve had many friends and neighbors leave. The beautiful, tight knit community I came of age in no longer exists thanks to rampant overdevelopment and real estate greed. The familiar community I once loved is now one where I increasingly feel like a stranger. Sadly, after decades here, I too am looking to leave in the near future.
