Asians are a diverse group of people who bring with them a host of distinct cultures from dozens of countries and a multitude of different languages–45 to be exact.

What? What is your source on this? And what population are you talking about? “To be exact“? In a city of 8 million plus? No way in hell there only 45 “Asian” languages spoken, either by the city at large or its DOE school-attending student population. Does “Asian” include Arabic and Hebrew too? Do you know that there are HUNDREDS of languages spoken in just the Philippines or Indonesia? To say nothing of the hundreds of other languages spoken in multiple countries. Indians don’t speak “Indian” they speak any of more than two dozen state official or unofficial languages.

In 2010, 34% of Asian students who took the specialized high school test were admitted.

Asians are not only taking the test in disproportionate numbers, but passing it more frequently as well.

Asians are the highest performing group in the NYCDOE.

“Not following their footsteps and leaving to do something that would result in lower status and lower salaries just didn’t make sense to any of the adults,” she says, looking back.”

White teachers are obviously not harming the Asian community.

Born 1976. Proud Professional American 🇺🇸 Public School Teacher since 2000. Some might call me one of two Asian American teachers at my school (or even in my district), but I like to think of myself as just another caring teacher. I don’t think about it much as I love teaching all kids, but when I do sit in our staff meetings and district PDs I do take notice I’m the only one or there is only one or two others. This really is sad as the teaching profession needs to be more diverse.

This article was fascinating for us to read as we can relate to it— we are experiencing this in California as well. I was told by a substitute teacher she discovered there are only 2 Asian American teachers in this is particular entire school district in California. Many Asian American students each year disembark our district and attending elsewhere because they, too, don’t feel appreciated, acknowledge, and recognize.

Reading many similar articles has made me more analytical 🧐 as to why some policymakers and university admissions as well and recruiters and others might be ignorant when it comes down to it. I don’t know if one would call it jealousy or just plain ignorant? A test is a test is a test no matter how one might want to dice it or digest it… tests/assessments do not “see” the race, you either pass or don’t, you either reach a certain percentage or points, but it does not yield nor raise your score just because you are a certain race.
