Composting programs have failed twice due to lzck of interest from New Yorkers, who are smart enough not to want stinking garbage pails around their apartments/homes. The DSNY is not stupid enough to fail for a 3rd time.

This takes education- there are ways to do this that dont require you to hve stinky garbage pails in your apartment.

As I noted, composting program failed twice already due to lack of interest. ‘Educate’ sounds like forcing people. The program is not going to return and if if the city council mandates it compliance will be near zero. No way to enforce a mandate without DSNY inspecting everyone’s garbage. LOL! Sounds like the perfect job for someone like you. LOL!

Fully agree, given that food rotting in landfills counts for 1/3 of Methane gasses released nationally, according to the EPA. But you tell us your priorities with your budget, and the mayor’s budget allocates nothing to composting. In fact, he cuts the entire DSNY budget. So while these councilmembers may clothe what we on the Right call conservation in the Leftist tropes of “justice” (here, “environmental justice”) it’s all just talk and virtue signalling; that’s it.

With a good public education program this can happen. I work in a school and we want to compost but can’t because there is no collection in our neighborhood. It is distressing to see the city rolling back composting and waste reduction programs. This is long overdue, and an important component of fighting climate change. It’s frankly embarrassing that NYC has such a poor record on this.
