East Harlem deteriorated after over 60 years of government urban renewal. My family was uprooted and chased out by Mayors O Dwyer,Wagner and master builder Robert Moses who broke up every enclave in NYC with eminent domain. Read your history of ltalian and Spanish Harlem.

The Wagner houses were built. That turned a middle class neighborhood. Into low income . The neighborhood experienced drugs and increase in crime. During the 60s and 70s .

My mother was the first resident at the taino towers, her name was Irma Ojeda. I was 11 years old at the time we lived in apt 1501. they when I left, she moved to apt 1402, then when my brother got married, she moved to apt 602. Section 8 would make you move when you no longer had the children there. when we moved in. My mother was interviewed on TV news channel about being one of the previous residents of the brook stoned building that burned down in 1967. My mother was elated, I always found them creepy because of the big giant windows in the rooms. I hated that place. I would feel the building swerve back and forth like they were not settled in yet. I remember one time going up 15 flights with groceries because the elevator broke and they had two. These building are now ruined and just awful I can’t believe they are charging people $4000. a month to live there. I left in 1985 and never looked back.
