FYI: After steady improvement in jobholding rates during the late 1990s, unemployment among single moms climbed 2.5 percent, to 9.4 percent, between 2000 and the first half of 2003, according to a Community Service Society of New York study. And the jobs they’re getting aren’t offering much: The median wage for a single mom with a high school degree is $10 an hour, and $8 an hour for moms who didn’t graduate. CSSNY says these numbers these numbers show the deep toll the recession is taking on single moms, and should give pause to lawmakers working on reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program.
