COVID-19 Could Slow City’s Efforts to Curb Water Pollution

If the DEP can’t address CSO’s then the state should not allow any new sewer hookup in sewer shed areas which are releasing significant levels of raw sewage into the public waters during rain showers. Noxious levels of CSO discharges are directly related to the amount of development within a sewage shed. Until the State directly ties Clean Water Regulations with new development to clean water regulatory statues, the city will never make the effort to find a way to prevent the unhealthy levels of noxious waste being dispersed into local waters.

Should the city not be able to finance the two EPA required CSO detention tanks in Gowanus, then our city elected representatives should do what their constituents believe is the more decent thing and not rezone the banks of the canal for residential use. There is no justification for adding to a problem you claim you don’t have the wherewithal to address.
