Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo’s sudden decision to resign at year’s end sets up an early 2016 special election that, like most specials, is unlikely to attract much voter interest. The last time the voters of the Bronx’s 17th district spoke, in the 2013 general election, they re-elected Arroyo by a margin of 13 to one over two challengers. Early that year, an upstart challenger, Julio Pabon, managed to snag 31 percent of the vote against Arroyo in a primary that would have been sleepy were it not for the odd appearance of Derek Jeter’s name on the councilwoman’s ballot petitions.
Pabon’s name has not been among those said to be interested in seeking the seat in the race to replace the departing Arroyo.
“After much consideration and discussion with my family, I have decided to resign from the City Council effective December 31, 2015. It has been a privilege to serve the people who live and work in the 17th Council District, the people of the Bronx, and of the great City of New York. It is an experience I will always cherish and I am proud to say we’ve made the Bronx a better place,” Arroyo said in a statement yesterday. “I must now dedicate my time and efforts to address pressing family needs. I will always be thankful to my colleagues in the Council for their continuous support, along with my friends and supporters who have made it possible for me to serve the people of the Bronx. To my constituents and colleagues I say thank you! I am grateful to you for all your support.”
