Note how no City Council members were at the announcement. No councilperson is going to support jails in their districts.

Once Rikers is closed, LaGuardia Airport should be extended onto the land, as proposed by ReThink Studio… http://www.rethinkstudio.org/newlga

What needs to happen for Rikers Island for the moment is to repair the Island facilities. In addition, I believe that the NYC Correction Department should be merged with/taken over by the NYC Police Department as was the Transit and Housing Police Departments in 1995. Most inmates behave themselves while incarcerated however the disruptive inmates should be dealt with in a constructive manner. The NYPD can manage the Correction Officers. The merger would be beneficial to the City in terms of training(new Police Academy) for the Correction Officers as well as a more efficient system for the inmate from the moment of arrest to release. It would be one less Union to deal with at contract time as the Correction Officers would be under the PBA. The NYC Correction Department should be operated county by county(borough by borough) as Sheriff’s Offices operate throughout the USA. Smaller jails are the answer because they are more manageable. NYPD Management is the key. Respectfully, Melvin C. Fieramosca. Retired NYC Correction, A.D.W.

NYPD is just as corrupt as corrections officers. You asking for the merger of two corrupt entities to make an even larger corrupt conglomerate. I can’t agree with you. Both organizations need retraining. Inmates are humans, they are father’s, mother’s, son’s and daughter’s they should be treated with respect regardless to how officers feel about the crime they committed or was alleged to commit. Officers need to learn how to disassociate their emotions. They’re too emotional and as a result do bad things like injure inmates or beat and kill unarmed people.

I agree with Diblasio’s plan 100%. I believe it’s a needed and overdue step on the right direction. Reduce mass incarceration.
