Totally agree with the author. The NYPD has shown itself to be incapable of meaningful traffic enforcement, in part because its officers and leadership identify with drivers and largely live in places where cyclists and pedestrians are alien beings. The enforcement job can be done by widespread red light, speed and failure-to-yield cameras, supplemented by a separate force composed of city residents and that takes great pains to avoid seeing the world from behind a windshield.

And don’t forget good street design—infrastructure that passively enforces low speeds and safe driving

I was talking about enforcement in the traditional sense, but absolutely, self-enforcing infrastructure is the best way to save lives, as the author implies.

Good for you Keegan, say it like it is. Great article.

    Absolutely.

It’s a damn shame that the city is hamstrung by Albany in regards to camera enforcement though. We might as well dedicate the vast majority of our resources towards street reconfigurations.

There should be multiple speed humps on every block that is not an artery. Curb extensions and neck down should be the standard at intersections. Lane reductions citywide. We need to pedestrianize many more streets and create an actual network of physically separated bicycle lanes. Might as well install bollards everywhere too.

The logical conclusion is that the corrupt, dishonest, criminal NYPD should simply be abolished entirely. It is not functioning as a police force; it is acting more like a mafia.

It will probably be necessary to organize a police force in order to shut down the NYPD mafia.

Driver, Pedestrian, Cyclist and now the NYPD
It’s interesting that it’s always the other guy who is at fault.
