East New York might be where NYC’s future is going to happen, but right now the neighborhood is far from the city’s centers of power and influence.
To understand what the area might become, Brooklyn Historical Society is hosting a panel of residents, advocates and experts on how the neighborhood got to where it is now.
Panelists include Michelle Neugebauer, Executive Director, Cypress Hill Local Development Corporation; Patricia Worthy, longtime East New York resident; Winston Von Engel, Director, New York City Department of City Planning, Brooklyn Office; and Brandon Gibson, Founder and CEO of Light Rock Holdings LLC and longtime resident.

Up until around 1960 ENY was a safe working class mostly Italian and Jewish area, with pockets of Irish and even Dutch residents. As Blacks and Hispanics moved in the crime rate skyrocketed. The housing stock rapidly deteriorated. By 1968 it was one of the most unsafe, worst neighborhoods in the city. I just saved you $5.
