FYI: New York State spent $10,922 per pupil on elementary and secondary school education in 2001, more than any other state, according to new Census Bureau data. New Jersey ranked second in per-pupil spending, at $10,893, followed by D.C., at $10, 852. Collectively, states spent just over $7,200 per student, for a total of almost $411 billion, which is a 6.6 percent increase over the previous year. The Census report also notes that New York was among five states that borrowed more than $2 billion for construction or refinancing of school buildings. [3/18/03]
