FYI: Dr. Preston Washington, Jr., co-founder of Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement and pastor of Memorial Baptist Church, died of a heart attack on June 25 at age 54. The East Harlem native led several housing and community development projects in his home neighborhood over the last three decades. HCCI, a consortium of 80 Harlem congregations, has helped develop hundreds of millions of dollars of housing and commercial properties in Harlem. Washington also helped found House of Hope, a million dollar development to house homeless single parents and their kids. A musical wake will be held at Memorial Baptist this Sunday, from noon to six. A memorial service will be held at the church on Monday at noon. [7/3/03]
