Meet journalist and author Julie Scelfo, whose debut book, The Women Who Made New York, reveals the untold stories of the women who made New York City the cultural capital of the world. She features revolutionaries and activists, like Zora Neale Hurston and Audre Lorde, as well as icons and iconoclasts, like Fran Lebowitz and Grace Jones. The book is organized into numerous subjects: The Politicos: Shirley Chisholm and Bella Abzug and features prominent women like Frances Perkins and Eleanor Roosevelt, respectively WCC founding and early members. Paired with striking illustrations by artist Hallie Heald, The Women Who Made New York offers a glimpse into the role women played in New York City’s history and identity. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. A book signing session will follow the reading and discussion of the book.
