ABOUT THIS SHOW
Initiated in the early 90s, this series focuses on emerging, up & coming contemporary choreographers who are refining/defining their distinctive styles. Curated by Doug Post.
ShaLeigh Dance Works will present Dead Man’s Walk, the opening section of the company’s newest evening-length work entitled I Promise. The premiere was received with a standing ovation on opening night while excerpts were already being described as “Rousing group work!” by Indy Week and launched the Company’s first NYC tour since landing in NC. Dance critic Byron Woods listed I Promise as one of “Five exceptional dances of 2017!”
The title of the work is a response to Martin Luther King’s iconic 1963 speech, “I Have a Dream.” I Promise is the sentiment of remembering to carry the dream forward. The physicality of I Promise is driven by the desire to rebel and fueled by Comerford’s vision to transform unspoken emotions into physical sensations. Although individuals momentarily emerge through solos, and relationships emerge through duets, the ensemble work dominates, revealing a tribal force pointing at humanity.
I Promise is choreographed by Artistic Director ShaLeigh Comerford in collaboration with the Company. Original compositions and covers are by Mike Wall at soundFORMovement.
