ensemble mise-en will perform numerous works by the esteemed Swiss oboist, conductor, and composer Heinz Holliger as part of its PORTRAIT concert series. The works featured in this program span 1971 – 2012, giving audiences a glimpse into the evolution and diversity of Holliger’s work as a composer over time. The pieces ranging from soloist to more expansive works, and highlight Holliger’s mastery of unorthodoxy. The celebrated piece Ma’mounia (2002), a commission for the Concours de Genève, captures the experimentality of Holliger’s works — it is, in parts, minimalist, then frenetic, with complex interplay among instruments. Throughout, the piece is anchored by dynamic percussion, including a virtuoso solo to be performed by ensemble mise-en percussionist Josh Perry.
