Valerie Naranjo, gyil; Barry Olsen, kuar, gangaa, piano
For centuries communities in West Africa have played the gyil, a mallet keyboard instrument whose vibration is believed to balance and harmonize the water content of the body to bring healing and balance; and to transport the soul of a person when they die. Although tremendously complex, the nature of this traditional marimba/percussion music is deliciously soulful and direct. Valerie Naranjo, Barry Olsen (and an occasional special quest) will share this music in a rare New York appearance.
