#MeTooOnline: Workshopping Solutions to Counter Cyber violence against Women

March 16, 2018 @ 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

This event will initiate development of robust industry-wide guidelines on protecting women working in the media against sexualized and/or gendered cyber violence. Invited speakers will highlight how media houses and organizations can use examples of best practices for handling hate and threats towards women journalists and other media women.
Despite growing evidence and acknowledgment of the threats sexualized and/or gendered cyber violence poses for media pluralism, and despite the fact that working online is a vital part of every journalist’s life in the contemporary media landscape, most media houses & organizations do not have formal policies on protecting their female employees against cyber violence.
Cyber-violence against women working in media (Cyber-VAW-WIM) thus becomes a particular area of concern where two objectives of the Beijing Platform for Action: ending violence against women and enhancing women’s representation in and access to the media become closely intertwined. You have already turned your attention to the problem of cyber violence against women and girls noting that “Online activities do impact people’s lives and their lived experience in very different ways,” and by your creation of the Troll-Busters platform to combat cyber violence against journalists. While the use of information and communications technology has contributed to the empowerment of women and girls and to a fuller realization of their human rights, the recent phenomenon of online sexualized violence against women and girls, and particularly against women in media, threatens to undermine these achievements.
