New York, NY… Listen…Can You Hear Me Now?, a solo show written and performed by Gloria Rosen and directed by Suzanne Bachner has added performance by popular demand on October 29 at 4PM in the 2016 United Solo Theatre Festival, the world’s largest solo theatre festival, currently in its 7th season. This is a new incarnation of Listen…Can You Hear Me Now? significantly revised and expanded under new direction and ASL interpreted for the first time. The team includes: Director, Suzanne Bachner; ASL interpreter, Stephanie Feyne and Lighting/ sound designers, Katie Chai and Chasmin Halliburton. Intrigued by her history of growing up with deaf parents, Gloria Rosen (writer/performer) was encouraged by an extraordinary acting coach, Peter Flint, to find her own voice through telling her story in play form. Under his mentorship, a 20-minute version of Listen…Can You Hear Me Now? was presented in 2007. It has continued to grow in various festivals such as: Women At Work; Network One Act Plays; Estrogenius and the Los Angeles Women’s Theater Festival (two years). It won Best Of Fringe at the Hollywood Fringe Festival. An excerpt was presented at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County for their sign language class of hearing students. The questions the children asked in the talk back expressed curiosity and compassion regarding a subject that was completely new to them. It was most recently performed at the New York International Fringe Festival where it played to sold-out houses and in May 2014, a workshop was presented at Stage Left Studio in New York City.
The current production is now required viewing for the ASL (American Sign Language) class at Laguardia Community College, and Gloria has been invited to come to the class afterward for a talk back with the students.
The play is autobiographical, centering on Gloria’s life growing up as the hearing child of deaf parents. Although they signed to each other, Gloria’s mother did not teach or allow her to use sign language. The show explores experiences that were often funny, sometimes frustrating, at times devastating, and the vital importance of communication in mixed families. Initially directed towards primarily hearing audiences, the play is now attracting attention from both the Deaf and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) communities, who strongly relate to her story. The overall intention of Listen… is to bring the hearing and Deaf worlds closer together in an alliance of mutual understanding. From its beginning as a personal quest by Gloria to find her own voice, Listen is now evolving into a vehicle that will hopefully give a voice to others on the same path.
GLORIA ROSEN (Writer/Performer) is a NY based Actor/ Writer and Coach. She has appeared in numerous plays by award winning playwright Duncan Pflaster, most recently Lights and Noise and Bees and Boys for the Red Fern Theatre Company. She recently created the role of Emily in Hidden Beauty at the NY EstroGenius Festival; Bubby in Bubby’s Shadow at Planet Connections, and The Mother in the Indie Film – How to Break Up With Your Mother which has been screened at the following: Los Angeles Comedy Festival; LA Indie Music & Film Summit; The Art of Brooklyn Film Festival; New Film Makers NY Festival and numerous other venues. She also participates in the Effective Arts program as an actor – using improvisational techniques to aid in the training of clinical professionals in the field of organ donation. Gloria has performed at the Actor’s Studio; the Samuel French Festival; Manhattan Rep and in a reading at Primary Stages. She can also be seen in numerous College Humor episodes.
SUZANNE BACHNER (Director) is an award-winning playwright and director. She is the director and developer of Bob Brader’s internationally acclaimed, award-winning solo shows including Spitting In The Face Of The Devil. Other solo show directing: Sarah Elizabeth Greer’s Bio-Hazard: A Relative Comedy (United Solo Europe 2016), Canadian Burlesque star Rosie Bitts’ Stories of Love and Passion (US and Canadian tour) and her new play, The Good Adoptee (Best Autobiographical Script, United Solo). Playwriting and directing credits: CIRCLE (Sold Out International Tour, “Most Daring Show” of the London Fringe), the long-running NYC cult hits, Icons & Outcasts and BITE and We Call Her Benny, which Broadway World called “the future of theatre”. Suzanne studied playwriting with Romulus Linney and Adrienne Kennedy and holds an MFA from the Actors Studio Drama School at the New School University. PETER FLINT (Conceived by) directed numerous productions in New York City, Canada, and regional theatres across the country. Productions include Joan of Arc, Biloxi Blues, Candide, Into the Woods, Same Time Next Year, 1940’s Radio Hour, Doubles, Charley and Algernon, A Little Night Music, Tell Me on a Sunday, Nine, Baby, Applause. As an actor, Mr. Flint has appeared on Broadway, Off-Broadway and in multiple Films and Television programs. He created the Music-Theatre Dept. at the University of Hartford and the HARTT MUSIC THEATRE CO.
