Healing Through the Dark Emotions: The Alchemy of Grief, Fear, and Despair
November 18th, 2017
9:30 am– 4:30 pm
Miriam Greenspan, MEd, LMHC
In an age of political and economic upheaval characterized by increasing threats to life, human rights, and the Earth itself, the dark emotions of grief, fear, and despair have become widespread and overwhelming. While our culture views the dark emotions as “negative”—symptoms of mental illness or spiritual inadequacy—this seminar focuses on the transformative power that comes to us when we know how to listen to the wisdom of the broken heart. It is not the dark emotions but our avoidance/denial of them that contributes to the psychiatric epidemics of our age: chronic depression, anxiety, psychic numbing, addiction, and mass violence.
Through presentations, mindfulness meditation, stories, discussion, breath and energy work, visualization, cognitive reframing, and heart-centered spiritual exercises, we will learn the seven steps of the alchemy of the dark emotions and practice the three basic skills of this process—attending, befriending, and surrendering to the flow of emotion in the body. The intention of this work is to master the alchemy by which grief turns to gratitude, fear opens into joy, and despair ushers in a resilient faith in life. In a dark time, the gifts of the dark emotions are needed more urgently than ever.
