The Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition
Picture the golden light of summer warming the red bricks of a Civil War-era building to an orange glow, complementing the blue of the sky and water along with Lady Liberty’s green patina, as she thrusts her arm upward, and gazes defiantly yet benevolently from across the channel. This setting encompasses the themes of BWAC’s two summer exhibits, SPEAK YOUR TRUTH, and COLOR.
In SPEAK YOUR TRUTH, 200 local artists have been asked to openly share their values, beliefs and whatever else inspires them to create art…
and if you love color (and according to English art critic John Ruskin, the purest and most thoughtful minds do) you must see BWAC’s second COLOR show – a nationally juried show, this year curated by Lilian Tone of The Museum of Modern Art. Close to 1800 pieces were submitted from which Tone selected 100.
Throughout its thirty-eight year history, BWAC has remained committed to its purpose of providing artists, both established and emerging, a venue to make their art available to a wide audience. This commitment to diversity and participation includes the opportunity for visitors to be part of the conversation and vote for “People’s Choice,” one of several awards presented by BWAC to the exhibiting artists. The other prizes, selected by Tone, will be awarded at the opening ceremony on Saturday, July 23rd at 3PM: the $1000 Best in Show Gold prize , along with-the $500 Best in Show Silver, a Curator’s Choice of $250, and ten $100 Certificates of Recognition.
The 2016 BWAC Summer Shows open on Saturday, July 23rd and run through Sunday, August 14th,
weekends only 1:00PM to 6:00PM, with special events every single day (see bwac.org for performance calendar).
