Woe-nderland and City of Curiosities fall within Art in FLUX’s 2017 curatorial theme “Re-Imagining a City” where artists use art, play and community engagement as a catalyst for examining and conceptualizing urban life. Woe-nderland curated by Henone Girma features five NYC-based artists – Belinda James, Ben Ponté, Elan Ferguson, JaSon Auguste, and Tariku Shiferaw. The title Woe-nderland takes as its point of departure the 1996 single ‘If I Ruled the World’ by recording artist Nas that begins with “Life, I wonder, will it take me under, I don’t know” – a simultaneous testimony to the ills of society and contemplation of its potentials. The works in the show cajole us into wondering where we are headed and to examine our circumstances. The exhibition offers a rather satirical lens through which we may reimagine our current social construct – this perhaps creating a timely opportunity for relating and purging.
City of Curiosities is a public art installation on a construction site to be developed summer 2017. Art In FLUX engaged 9 uptown artists in the project. Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez (Washington Heights) painted the mural backdrop and 8 artists created dioramas of sorts. Each artist was given thirty days, a 24” x 30” x 6” box with an open front, and an overall theme (City of Curiosities) within which to work. Silverock Development provided financial support for materials and artists stipends. The installation will remain on the construction site for approximately 2 months and each diorama will be auctioned off to support more uptown public art projects.
After Party – After strolling the boulevard and viewing the art exhibitions, guests are invited to join us at Angel Of Harlem with DJ Medina and all night happy hour specials!
