Baryshnikov Arts Center and Five Boroughs Music Festival co-present Baroque string band ACRONYM and the vocalists of Les Canards Chantants. The concert features the unusual and enticing large-ensemble sonatas of Giovanni Valentini (c1582-1649) – coupled with the first modern performances of selections from his Secondo libro di madrigali (1616), the earliest known madrigals to call for instruments other than continuo, exactly four hundred years after the madrigals’ publication.
ACRONYM is a twelve-member string band, dedicated to giving modern premieres of the wild instrumental music of the seventeenth century, resurrecting long-forgotten works. They join forces with Les Canards Chantants, a solo-voice ensemble committed to dynamic interpretation of renaissance polyphony, who have been praised for their “polished singing” and for “instilling their superb performances with liveliness and theatricality” (Boston Musical Intelligencer).
