A Portrait of Survivors with Convictions

January 28, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

| Free

Even though human trafficking survivors interact regularly with advocates in the criminal justice system in New York City, they are not being identified as survivors and remain invisible. Survivors remain unidentified within this system because they do not fit within the stereotypical and mainstream narrative of trafficking. They enter the system under the label of a criminal- not as a survivor.
In honor of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, Rush Gallery will host “A Portrait of Survivors with Convictions”, an intimate conversation and portrait viewing about the complexities facing human trafficking survivors with criminal convictions. A panel featuring legal experts, social justice advocates, and survivors will discuss how survivors interact with the criminal justice system, potential solutions to these issues, and how photography can play an essential role in bringing survivors out of the shadows.
