On Monday, November 21, the Flatiron/23rd Street Partnership Business Improvement District will launch its fifth annual “23 Days of Flatiron Cheer” programming and unveil, in partnership with Van Alen Institute, a dynamic interactive installation – Flatiron Sky-Line – at one of the country’s most recognizable intersections.
The event will offer a preview of “23 Days,” which runs from December 1 to 23 and features free, holiday-themed events showcasing the intersection of shopping, dining, and culture in the neighborhood. The event will feature performance from The Jazz Gallery, small bites from ilili Box, hot chocolate from Shake Shack, and a chance to spin the popular Flatiron prize wheel to win gifts from local businesses.
Event attendees will be the first to experience Flatiron Sky-Line, the centerpiece of the “23 Days” festivities. Flatiron Sky-Line is the winner of the third annual Flatiron Public Plaza Holiday Design Competition, which called for proposals from New York-based design firms for a temporary installation in the heart of Flatiron. The Flatiron Partnership and Van Alen Institute ran the competition this summer.
Designed by LOT, an award-winning architectural and design firm headquartered in New York City and Greece and directed by principals Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, Flatiron Sky-Line is a series of 10 large contiguous arches, constructed of white powder-coated steel tubes with LED lights.
Visitors to the installation and participants in “23 Days” programming are encouraged to share their photos on social media using the hashtag #FlatironSkyLine. Throughout the month of December, photos using the hashtag will be featured on the Partnership’s social media channels and will be eligible to win prizes.
