Williams says he was surprised at the level of interest in his candidacy during a recent trip to upstate New York.

City Councilmember Jumaane Williams is not running for governor, but is running against much of what Andrew Cuomo stands for. And he told the Max & Murphy podcast on Thursday that there is an appetite for that message well beyond the Brooklyn district where he has won three terms in the City Council.

Listen below as Williams discusses his reasons for running, his feelings about Cuomo and incumbent lieutenant governor Kathy Hochul, his position on gay marriage and abortion rights and his chances in the race to come.
