The beleaguered New Horizons shopping center has finally opened in the Crotona Park section of the Bronx, bringing with it a 49,000 square-foot Pathmark supermarket. In development since the early 1990s and originally slated to open in 2001, construction difficulties delayed the project multiple times, swelling its $30 million budget and straining the community organization that is backing it, Mid-Bronx Desperadoes (MBD). Much like the 125th Street Pathmark center in Harlem, New Horizons is a product of a partnership between MBD and the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, a real-estate investment fund working on urban retail development.
