FYI: In the world of foundation giving, it’s all about the rich getting richer, or so says a study conducted by the Foundation Center and the Boston Globe. The Globe got the Foundation Center to look at giving patterns of 1,000 foundations, and found that their gifts mainly went to prestigious universities and other elite groups. Fourteen of the top 20 grant recipients between 1992 and 2001 were elite universities. One out of every four dollars given in 2001 went to elite colleges and universities, while one in 10 went to human services nonprofits. Defenders of the giving pattern argue, however, that the elite groups are getting money to fund large-scale projects that have impact the same human services issues the smaller groups are working on.
