FYI: The council’s Contracts Committee is reviving Council Member Christine Quinn’s domestic partnership bill this week, with hearings this afternoon. Quinn’s bill would force any company with a city contract worth more than $100,000 to offer the same benefits to the domestic partners of employees as it does to married spouses. Quinn says that many local companies and contractors support the bill, including large names such as Verizon and Merrill Lynch. But Mayor Bloomberg has registered his unequivocal opposition, arguing the city cannot afford to address social problems through its business dealings. [11/13/03]
