FYI: The federal Department of Health and Human Services granted approval last week to New York’s plan to expand its Medicaid program to cover people with disabilities who are still able to work. Working adults with incomes up to 250 percent of the poverty level will qualify, adding an estimated 20,000 individuals to the program over the next five years. A 1999 law opened the door for states to apply for Medicaid rule waivers opening their program to disabled people who are able to work but don’t make enough money to afford their expensive healthcare needs.
