FYI: Mayor Bloomberg gave the City Council the veto everyone expected late last week when he rejected a bill opening education options for people receiving public assistance. The bill, which the Council passed overwhelmingly last month, sought to allow GED and English as a second language classes to count toward work requirements. The mayor had urged Governor Pataki to veto a similar statewide bill late last year, raising concerns about how it would limit the city’s “flexibility” in creating the “most productive work assignments” for each person. The Council is expected to override Bloomberg’s veto. [3/18/03]
