FYI: The Working Families Party and a group of elected officials rallied at City Hall this morning to pressure Mayor Bloomberg to back off of his push for nonpartisan elections. In a letter to the mayor, which the WFP says at least half of the city’s minority elected officials signed, they argue that nonpartisan elections would dilute the electoral strength of voters in low-income and minority neighborhoods that face “information and resource disadvantages” because party labels are important indicators of a candidate’s position. Check out David Jason Fischer’s exploration of the broader chaos nonpartisan elections could bring to local politics in the City Limits archive. [3/6/03]
