FYI: The City Council passed a bill broadening education options for people receiving public assistance, voting 42 to 3 in favor of a measure that advocates cajoled Speaker Gifford Miller into shepherding along. The law allows GED and English language classes to count toward work requirements. Mayor Bloomberg lobbied Governor Pataki to veto a similar state-level bill in December, and is thus likely to veto this version. Of course, as a recent Council press release trumpeted, the chamber has overturned six of the mayor’s vetoes already this session. [2/13/03]
