FYI: A federal District Court has thrown out a Bronx Legal Services suit against the Legal Services Corporation and Legal Services for New York City. Last summer, the Bronx group filed suit to challenge LSNY’s plan to consolidate services and centralize decision making for the seven nonprofits with which it contracts to provide legal services in the city. The plan was a response to dramatic congressional funding cuts for the Legal Services Corporation, but the Bronx group argued it would threaten the quality of services it can offer and refused to play along. Its suit charged that the plan violated both its contract with LSNY and federal antitrust laws. The court rejected all of the Bronx group’s charges. LSNY is now planning to open an LSNY-Bronx as its new legal services provider in the Bronx. [1/30/03]
