FYI: Former Bronx Borough President Freddy Ferrer is drawing criticism for his decision to join the board of a bank with a spotty record for lending to blacks and Latinos. Bronx activist Matthew Lee notes in his latest Inner City Press missive that Manhattan-based Sterling Bancorp lending arm denies home loans to blacks four times as often as it does whites–besting the national average, which is a 2-1 denial ratio. In New York City, Lee notes, Sterling approved exactly zero home loans for Latino applicants in 2001. [12/3/02]
