FYI: The one fight Mayor Bloomberg won in this month’s election was keeping off the ballot a question about creating a charter commission to study ways to mandate smaller classes in public schools. But advocates aren’t ready to drop the issue, and have turned to the City Council. The group Class Size Matters has launched a petition drive to get the council to use its authority to form a charter commission on the issue and is coordinating parent meetings with members to galvanize them. The group has stacked its web site with emails from parents to the mayor complaining about their kids’ classrooms and reports and fact sheets arguing that class size makes a difference in educational achievement.
