FYI: Lots of people are still out of work, their unemployment benefits are running out, and there’re no new jobs on the horizon. These were the themes in a slew of economic forecasts released in October. The city Comptroller’s office announced that unemployment in the city is still over 7 percent and that we’ve lost 7,200 jobs this year. The Center on Budget Policy and Priorities followed with a report noting around 99,000 unemployed New Yorkers used up their benefits in the last three months. Finally, a National Association of Purchasing Managers survey of New York members found that businesses in both the service and manufacturing sectors were holding off on new expenditures. [11/4/02]
