FYI: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently approved the first treatments for heroine addiction that can be delivered outside of clinics, creating options beyond methadone for the first time. Specialists have long believed the need to visit a methadone clinic daily, along with the drug’s stigma, deters thousands from seeking treatment. The active ingredient in two new drugs winning FDA approval is buprenorphine. For more information on these new treatments, check out the agency’s FAQ. [10/25/02]
